Day 6: Visiting Niagara Falls

Day 6

Niagara Falls, here we come!

Does the word "Falls" get capitalized when writing about Niagara Falls, as in:  We were visiting the Falls?  It seems to me that Niagara Falls is a proper noun and Falls is just a shortened version of the proper noun.  I'm going to go WITH capitalizing.

One of my many traveling quirks is that I like to NOT pack a sweatshirt or a t-shirt. I have made my children follow suit.  Sweatshirts seemed to be necessary for this cool, misty, rainy, wet day. Summer and I each got a hoodie sweatshirt with the necessary "Niagara Falls" displayed across the chest.

Nicholas, on the other hand, had my dad to assist him and they found THEE perfect jacket for the boy. Along the back of the collar...Canada.  (with a period at the end, I might add), secret inside pockets, and the best feature of all:  thumb holes!  He was one happy and dapper dude!

After we were properly attired, we set out for a full day of being tourists. The plan was to see a 4-D movie about the Falls, go in the tunnels under the Falls, and take a boat ride up to the base of the Falls.

To begin, we traded in our paper tickets for some very stylish bar coded cards things on lanyards.  We scanned our lanyard/bus passes, took the Green Line and arrived at the Horseshoe Falls.

Because she's a good sport, we banished my mom to the handicapped square while we waited at the bus stop.

And took a cute picture of the kids and Grandpa. Note Summer's excellent sweatshirt.

Once we got off the bus, we walked over to the Falls. And... Oh. My. God!!!  What an insane amount of water!  And we were so close to it!  And it's so high!  And the water is rushing so fast!  And the water is so clear!

Summer stood on the wall!  Shawn almost died!!

We walked on and found that we could get even closer!

Shawn was about 50 yards away, mouthing angrily while tapping away.

We saw a 4-D movie that used Ice Age (the movie) type cartoons to explain the creation of the Falls... in a very user friendly and accessible way.

After a little more shopping and a little more waiting, we went to tour the tunnels and observation decks under the Falls.

One of two openings to see what it is like to actually be behind the Falls.

The beginnings of actually getting wet. My motto is, "If you visit Niagara Falls and you aren't wet at the end, you didn't do it right!"

From the lower observation deck...

Shawn BRAVELY agreed to go near the edge to take a picture of some girls.

The noise, the power, the wind, the mist, the pelting...unlike anything I've ever seen. And I've seen and done some pretty cool stuff in my life!

Euphoric!

Summer:

One of the unfinished tunnels:

We were on such a high after this experience that we didn't even realize that we had walked all the way back to the American Falls. So, let's do the boat ride!

Umm...yuck. I bet the sea foam is at least  two or three feet thick!

We boarded the vessel and headed for the upper deck.

Passing the Ameican Falls

American Falls

More American Falls

We didn't take any pictures of us actually at the base of the Horseshoe Falls....we were being pelted with water!  In the end, we were quite successful at getting wet!
Wet shoes, wet socks, wet pants, wet sleeves, wet hair... WET!

After a change of clothes, some dinner, and a walk up the street to see the tourist attractions, we caved and bought the kids passes to ride the rides in our hotel's arcade. The kids rode the bumper cars until their brains were scrambled!
